EMBS | Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society

IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society is the world’s largest international society of biomedical engineers! Members of this organization reside in about 97 countries spread across the globe. EMBS provides its members with access to people, practices, information, ideas, and opinions that are shaping one of the fastest-growing fields in science today.

Representing Coimbra and Portugal, we are the group of students comprising the Chapter dedicated to Biomedical Engineering associated with the IEEE Student Branch of Coimbra, the IEEE EMBS UC.

Where can you find us?

Based on our activities, we aim to complement the course and assist in the journey to discovering the answer to: “What does a biomedical engineer do?”. To achieve this, we rely on the existence of various differentiated working groups, all with the objective of creating innovative initiatives for the entire academic community interested in the areas of technology and medicine. Additionally, we are also building a robot that will later be the IEEE mascot.

What Now?

Get ready to explore the incredible journeys of Biomedical Engineering alumni and professionals! In our What Now? series, we dive into academic and career paths to bring you valuable insights into the future of Biomedical Engineering and related fields.

Talks & Workshops

The Talks & Workshops Team aims to develop activities covering the latest scientific advancements in various branches of Biomedical Engineering. To achieve this, they invite specialists, researchers, and professors to discuss their areas of study, current trends, innovations in the field, and its relevance to Engineering, Science, and Technology in modern society. Additionally, speakers share their academic and professional experiences, offering insights into their journeys as former students to inspire those just beginning their paths.

Technical Project

The EMBS UC Technical Group aims to develop new means/tools to increase its visibility within the broader academic community, particularly among students and graduates in Biomedical Engineering or related fields. The main goal of all potential projects is to foster critical and creative thinking among all participants, alongside the development of various hard skills in programming, robotics, and more.

Hackathon

The EMBS UC Hackathon is an intensive 24-hour competition where multidisciplinary teams tackle challenges focused on various fields of engineering, with a particular emphasis on Biomedical Engineering. Throughout the event, participants have the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in practice, collaborate with peers from different backgrounds, explore new technologies, and present projects with real-world impact.
